“The government gave this money to them with one hand. They should not be trying to take it back with the other,” said Jen Burdick, an attorney at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia who has helped many people contest repayment demands.
Last year, COVID-19 killed 9,859 Australians, behind only heart disease and dementia (including Alzheimer’s) as the leading causes of death in the country.
The new data said 70,533 of the deaths, or nearly 78 percent, involved people age 65 or older. Also, 77,371 of the deaths, or about 85 percent, involved people 60 or older.
